Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves and explore what is possible.

Vision for Saltburn children

At Saltburn Primary School, we value Art and Design as a vital and integral part of our children’s education. It provides them with opportunities to share and express their individual creativity, and to make links with and learn about, the huge range of arts within our town and wider society. Art contributes to every child’s personal development in creativity, challenge, self-reflection, and independence. It enables pupils to develop a curiosity and natural sense of wonder about the world around them and therefore links strongly to our school ethos: Nurture, Inspire, Achieve. The local community of Saltburn provides our children with a wealth of artistic and cultural opportunities which we embrace to ensure our curriculum is both engaging, bespoke, and inspirational.

Aims

Through robust teaching practices, we aim to develop core areas for our children as they engage in the study of Art with enthusiasm and imagination:

Enjoyment and appreciation
Children will foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts through exposure to the work of artists, craftspeople and designers. They will be inspired to develop a love of art and nurture their talents and confidence through our Art curriculum. Children are able to freely explore ideas within their sketch books and reflect upon themselves as artists.
Creativity Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Through a range of activities and stimuli, children will develop their creativity. They will select their own ideas to use in their work and record from both first-hand experience and their imagination.
Knowledge
Every child will develop a knowledge of great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
Awareness   Through the study of great artists, children will increase their awareness of the roles and purpose of art and design in different times and cultures and explore careers within the art world.
Skills and technique Working both independently and collaboratively, children will develop a wide range of art and design techniques to become visually literate including the use of colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They will also use different materials to improve skills in drawing, painting and sculpture.Evaluation and analysis
Children will evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. They will respond knowledgeably to the work of other craftspeople and, through the use of their sketch books, they will be encouraged to review, revisit and evaluate their own ideas and improve their creative work.

Local context

Saltburn has a vibrant, contemporary air to the town, which continues to make a name for itself in terms of the arts. Our children are lucky enough to be able to grow up immersed in this culturally rich society and we embrace community art links to ensure our children make the most of these opportunities.

Throughout Saltburn, the many visual installations reflect the town’s value of the arts, helping our children to grow up with an appreciation of how art contributes towards the fabric of a community. Upon entering the town, residents and visitors alike are greeted with sculptures depicting the railway, the Ha’penny bridge and the town’s pier. Stunning mosaics within the town centre provide a beautiful representation of the rich history of Saltburn, supported by the modernist sculpture of its founder, Henry Pease.

Cliff top sculptures commissioned in 1990 provide a spectacular addition to the Huntcliff coastal section of the Cleveland Way. Alongside these visual arts are the stunning rugged coastline: Huntcliff, Victorian housing, Valley Gardens, the pier and the funicular cliff lift all providing a unique opportunity for inspirational art.

Saltburn and the wider area offer access to a wealth of inspirational artists and spaces. Saltburn Studios house the Saltburn Artists Projects which includes a range of artistic disciplines including photography, felt making, painting, mosaics, sculpture, ceramics and glass making. The artists from a thriving artistic community aim to create an inspirational environment for artists, curators, educationalists and the community.

How will we enrich cultural capital?

We recognise that, while all children equally deserve the very best start in life, not all children receive the same opportunities as their peers around the country. Levels of disadvantage fluctuate from one school or class to another, and these differences can affect a child’s life chances in so many ways. We believe that it is our duty to enrich the lives of all children wherever possible to diminish this difference.

In the study of Art and Design, our local area provides many opportunities for children to experience engage in and observe visual arts.

  • Inviting local artists to visit school to share expert knowledge and skills with passion and enthusiasm
  • School trips organised to enhance classroom learning and provide children with a visual stimulus
  • Engaging in national and local events and celebrations
  • Saltburn Studios – links to local artists and studio space
  • Engagement with Saltburn Earthbeat Centre for the arts
  • Use of community space to share and celebrate pupils’ work
  • Art Week – in-depth studies of the work of individual artists to stimulate the children’s own creative pieces.
  • Art Club – provides the opportunity for children to develop their skills and techniques.

The National Curriculum

Art Long Term Plan

Curriculum Links

Progression from EYFS

The EYFS framework is structured very differently to the National Curriculum as it is organised across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas.

Early Learning Goals that link to Art and Design:

EYFS – Expressive Arts and Design

  • I can explore and investigate materials.
  • I am starting to represent some objects with others.
  • I can explore art materials for large and small-scale art.
  • I can start to join materials together.
  • I can explore art materials and colour mixing freely.
  • I can develop my own ideas for art (and talk about them).

 EYFS – Physical development

ELG Fine motor

  • I can use a range of small tools, including scissors, paintbrushes, pencils.

 In Foundation Stage the children;

  • have daily opportunities to make their own creations using a wide range of different materials which are freely available in continuous provision,
  • are encouraged to talk about what they would like to create, how they will do it and what they think about it when it is finished,
  • are encouraged to evaluate what they have created, what they like and discuss changes they might make,
  • take part in parental engagement sessions where they work collaboratively to create artworks,
  • are exposed to range of artists throughout the year.

Assessment

Teachers assess children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in Art, by making observations during lessons against the learning objectives. Feedback is given individually and through whole class discussion. Children are encouraged to review and evaluate their own work thinking about successes, improvements and their own next steps. Termly judgements are made based on teacher observations and review of work produced.
