Modern Foreign Language at Saltburn Primary School

Knowledge of languages is the door way to wisdom.

Developing Saltburn children

At Saltburn Primary School, we recognise that the study of a modern foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and experience for children to develop their individual sense of identity and place in a multilingual and multicultural world. Our current MFL taught is Spanish, however we provide children with a vast range of opportunities to experience other languages and cultures. Children are immersed in the cultures, experiences, and values of others to enable them to flourish and mature into citizens who embrace different cultures, peoples and communities. This ensures the study of a modern foreign language in our school is a journey-a journey shaped by experiences, surroundings and exposure. Our children develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of their own culture and the those of others. As a child of Saltburn matures, they view themselves as citizens of the world, the United Kingdom and Saltburn. With this in mind, we have reviewed the statutory national curriculum for history (outlined at the end of this document), and tailored it to the requirements of our children to ensure that each child gets what they need and deserve: the best bespoke curriculum possible

Aims

Through robust teaching practices, we aim to develop core areas for our children as they engage in the study of a Spanish with curiosity, excitement and respect:

Appreciation
Children develop a passion and enthusiasm, encouraging others to be more curious about the world, and to learn and embrace diversity and respect all cultures.
Communication
Children speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

Comprehension
Children broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words and listen attentively to spoken language and demonstrate understanding by joining in and responding.
Metacognition
The study of other cultures and languages from a wide range of perspectives will help children to develop a sense of self-awareness and will help them to reflect upon their own experiences and learning.
Skills
Through a combination of class, group and independent study, children gradually develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.
Citizenship Learning another language deepens children’s understanding of the multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others
Brief explanation

Local context

Our children are fortunate to live in Saltburn which is a seaside town with a strong cultural identity. Saltburn is steeped in history and proud of its heritage and culture. We passionately believe that each child’s education should be rooted in local context to provide them with a familiar reference as they explore the wider world.

As a tourist attraction, Saltburn attracts visitors from every part of the globe. The coastline is popular with surfers, and national surfing events are held during the autumn and winter months, attracting competitors from across the United Kingdom. Annual events like the Saltburn Custom Class Car Show, the Saltburn Festival of Folk Music, Dance and Song and Saltburn Food Festival ensure our children are surrounded by rich and diverse cultural experience.

More broadly, Teesport in a major deep-sea complex and national asset for trade. Handling 28 million tonnes per year, the port supports the movement of international imports and exports throughout the North of the UK; affirming its position as a key driver and enabler of the Northern Powerhouse strategy.

How will we enrich cultural capital?

We recognise that, while all children equally deserve the very best start in life, not all children receive the same opportunities as their peers around the country. Levels of disadvantage fluctuate from one school or class to another, and these differences can affect a child’s life chances in so many ways. We believe that it is our duty to enrich the lives of all children wherever possible to diminish this difference.

In the study of a modern foreign language, our local area is a gateway to countless opportunities for children to broaden their ability to communicate in another language and explore a diversity of cultures.

Assessment

Teachers assess children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in MFL, by making observations during lessons against the learning objectives. Feedback is given individually and through whole class discussion. Children are encouraged to review and evaluate their own work thinking about successes, improvements and their own next steps. Termly judgements are made based on teacher observations and review of work produced.
