PSHE at Saltburn Primary School
At Saltburn Primary School, our intention is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and ensures that when children leave our school they do so with knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active role in today’s society. We want our children to have a belief in themselves, have high aspirations and realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. With an ever- changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.
At the heart of our school are our ‘Saltburn Standards’ which are there to guide our children. Each week, across the whole school, we focus on a specific element and celebrate this in our assembly. Our ‘Saltburn Standards’ provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights and responsibilities, resilience, appropriate behaviour and are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth.
Through our whole-school approach, we aim to prepare children for life. PSHE is taught both as a separate subject, given allocated time throughout the week, but we also understand that it permeates through all that we do and cannot be separated fully and is therefore a part of all our daily teaching.
At Saltburn Primary, we follow Jigsaw- a scheme of learning designed for the whole school. Jigsaw is a unique, spiral, progressive and effective scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
Aims
Through our whole-school approach, we aim to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
To develop health and wellbeing
Our teaching looks at both promoting mental and physical health. Work on ourselves looks at what makes us special and how our body grows and changes. We teach children about how to keep safe, including online safety. We ensure children understand the effects drugs, tobacco and alcohol have on our bodies. | To promote healthy relationships
Our teaching looks at families and developing close relationships. We look at how to develop friendships. We look at bullying and discrimination and how important it is to respect both ourselves and others. |
To understand the world in which we live
Our teaching looks at shared responsibilities and the community we belong in. We look at how we operate safely and effectively within an ever-changing digital world. Children are taught about economic wellbeing- both handling money and aspirations for their future. | To provide children with a voice
Our school council provide a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions which impact them. |
Local Context
Our children are fortunate enough to grow up within the rich environment of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. They are surrounded by a beautiful coastline with long stretches of sandy beaches, breath taking scenery and bustling entertainment in the town. They are exposed to plenty of opportunities to support a healthy body and mind, such as walks through the Victorian seaside resort including its pier, the colourful Italian Gardens and walks through Riftswood. Children are able to participate in activities such as water sports, enjoy the many play parks or take part in local theatre ran by the Saltburn Community and Arts Association.
We passionately believe that each child’s education should be rooted in local context to provide them with a familiar reference as they explore the wider world. At Saltburn Primary, we value all children and adults. We aim to support both individually; locally – within our school and local community; and on a global level. We ensure our children understand how important they are and how they can be important to others.

How will we enrich cultural capital?
We recognise that, while all children equally deserve the very best start in life, not all children receive the same opportunities as their peers around the country. Levels of disadvantage fluctuate from one school or class to another, and these differences can affect a child’s life chances in so many ways. We believe that it is our duty to enrich the lives of all children wherever possible to diminish this difference.
Each year, we support many national events such as:
– Children in Need
– Remembrance Day/ Poppy Appeal
– Anti-Bullying Week – starting off with Odd Socks Day
– Comic Relief/ Sport Relief
These provide our children with opportunities to fundraise, collaborate and join in celebrations. As a result, children gain a valuable, enriched school experience.
