Music at Saltburn Primary
Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.

Vision for Saltburn Children
At Saltburn Primary School, music is an extremely important ingredient in our children’s education. Our music curriculum has been designed to inspire pupils to develop a love of music as well as their own talent as musicians. This should increase their self-confidence, creativity, self-expression and sense of achievement. We believe that music is a universal language that children can use to embark on a musical journey; therefore, a high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of the subject.
Music is used to develop children’s confidence and imagination. Our children are able to develop skills in listening, composition and performance throughout school.
Music also plays a great part in our collective worship and within the wider community. Our children are given the chance to perform in concerts, plays, carol services, talent shows and class assemblies. We aim to give every child the opportunity to participate in a structured scheme of musical experiences and develop at their own pace, no matter what their age or ability.
We hope to foster a life- long love of music by exposing our children to diverse musical experiences and igniting a passion for music. By listening and responding to different musical styles, finding their voices as singers and performers and as composers, all will enable them to achieve their very best and become confident, reflective musicians.
With this in mind, we have reviewed the statutory national curriculum for music and adapted it to the needs of our children to ensure that each child gets what they need and deserve – the best bespoke curriculum possible.
Aims for Saltburn Children
Through robust teaching practices, we aim to develop these core areas for our children as they engage in the study of music with enthusiasm and passion:
Enjoyment & Appreciation
Children will engage in a music curriculum that inspires them to develop a love of music and nurtures their talent as a musician. This will increase their self-confidence, creativity and a sense of achievement.
Creativity
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. We will ensure that every child develops this creativity through composition, use of their voice and a range of musical instruments, exploration and imagination.
Knowledge
Every child will develop a rich base of facts based on music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. This includes the works of the great composers and musicians.
Performance
Children will develop their performance skills through a range of opportunities both within school and the wider community. They will sing and play musically with increasing enthusiasm, confidence, expression and control.
Skills
Through a combination of solo, ensemble and class contexts, children will develop skills in singing, composition, listening and the inter-related dimensions: pitch, dynamics, duration, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and notation.
Evaluation and Analysis
Every child will review, evaluate and analyse musical works from different genres, traditions, cultures and styles. This will further develop their critical engagement with music.
Local context
Saltburn is a delightful coastal town which bestows plenty of Victorian charm, culture and heritage. It has always been a very popular seaside destination!
We passionately believe that each child’s education should be rooted in local context to provide them with a familiar reference as they explore the wider world. As our children are lucky enough to be able to grow up immersed in this culturally rich society, we embrace community music links to ensure our children can make the most of these opportunities. There’s always lots to entertain in Saltburn, and that includes the up- and- coming arts scene!
Saltburn Folk Festival
This is one of the area’s premier events for folk music, dance and song. Its aim is to try to cover as much as possible of the very wide field that is today’s British folk scene. There are lots of concerts, but also a large number of dance displays and street performers.
Saltburn Bandstand

Saltburn was once home to three bandstands, one at the pier head, one in the Valley Gardens and one in Hazel Grove. After all was lost, a long campaign was fought by local people, in particular the Saltburn 500 Club to bring a bandstand back to the town. In July 1997, after years of fund raising and a National Lottery Grant for £63,500, the Bandstand (which was designed by Peter Fenton, a well- known local architect) was opened. The Bandstand boasts decorative security screens made by local wrought ironsmith James Godbold who has a forge in the village of Egton, North Yorkshire.
Every year free band concerts are held between May and September. Volunteers from the Saltburn 500 Club work hard to raise money to maintain the bandstand and organise the concerts with support from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council.
Saltburn Community Theatre

This beautiful Community Theatre in Saltburn is a 150- seat venue in a converted Primitive Methodist Church, which hosts a wide range of musical events.
Earthbeat Theatre Company

The ‘Earthbeat’ centre is now the permanent home of the ‘Earthbeat Theatre Company’ but it is also a thriving community hub.
Over the years, our children have had the amazing opportunity to work alongside ‘Earthbeat Theatre Company’.
How do we enrich cultural capital?
‘Cultural capital’ refers to the collective cultural experiences of a child which allows them to develop the essential knowledge they need to prepare them for their future success. We understand that, in terms of cultural exposure, not all children get the same start in life; however, we all agree that they deserve the very best. With this in mind, it is our duty as a school to enrich the lives of all children wherever possible.
In the study of music, our local area provides countless opportunities for children to experience, witness and engage in a range of musical experiences.
- Inviting local musicians and drama groups into school to bring music alive and share expert knowledge and skills with passion and enthusiasm (eg. local musicians, Saltburn ’53 drama group. Earthbeat theatre group)
- Use of community space to provide interaction with Music and Drama (eg. Community Theatre, Band Stand, local shops and Station area)
- School trips organised to enhance classroom learning and provide children with a musical performance stimulus (eg. Community Theatre/Earthbeat centre to see concerts and theatre performances, use of their stage for school performances)
- Borrowing resources from external agencies (eg. Community Theatre, TVMS)
- Engaging in local and national music events and celebrations
Choir – provides the opportunity for children to develop their singing skills and techniques.

Church services – Harvest, Christmas and Easter

The whole school likes to celebrate Harvest, Christmas and Easter every year at our local Emmanuel Church.
This is a great opportunity for parents and the community to come together to sing, as well as listening to poetry, readings and drama.
The church is always packed out!
Performance opportunities
All instrumentalists that have lessons in school have the opportunity to perform to an audience in assemblies or concerts during the year.
Choir
Our school choir (currently for Y4/5/6 children) makes us extremely proud! The choir rehearses weekly on a Monday and loves to support local and wider events.
Over the years, we have performed at SAGE Big Sing, TVMS Snappy events and in Middlesbrough Town Hall with other VALT schools. More recently, we have attended the North East Choir Festival at St Nicholas Church in Guisborough.
Musicals – Rats
The Y5/6 children, alongside our school choir, had the marvellous opportunity to perform in Middlesbrough Town Hall for a production of the musical RATS, alongside other VALT schools.
Oliver & The Wizard of Oz
At the end of each academic year, our wonderful Y5/6 children put on a magnificent performance of a range of musicals. We have the most talented children and thoroughly enjoy performing for a live audience.
Music Development Plan
Progression from EYFS
The EYFS framework is structured very differently to the national curriculum as it is organised across seven areas of learning rather than subject areas. The aim of this document is to help subject leaders to understand how the skills taught across EYFS feed into national curriculum subjects.
EYFS Linked areas of learning
Expressive arts and design
Music English/Literacy/Oracy
Physical development
Understanding the World
Early Learning Goals:
- Invent, adapt and recount stories with peers and their teacher
- Sing a range of well-known nursery rhymes and songs
- Perform songs, rhymes, poems and stories with others, and – when appropriate- try to move in time with music

Assessment
Teachers assess children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in Music, by making observations during lessons against the learning objectives. Feedback is given individually and through whole class discussion.
Children are encouraged to review and evaluate their own work and performance thinking about successes, improvements and their own next steps. Termly judgements are made based on teacher observations and review of work produced.
