It is really important that we promote competitive support in schools. It is very important we recognise that has to be underpinned by good quality physical education and by getting people into patterns of exercise.

Vision for Saltburn children

At Saltburn Primary school, we recognise that PE is an essential parts of a child’s everyday life and is key to preparing and supporting pupils towards healthy and active lifestyle choices and to help nurture their future well-being. It is our vision that all of our children learn about the importance of staying active and, through offering them a wide range of opportunities, inspire them to discover and experience the benefits that an active lifestyle can provide.  We understand the importance of nurturing an individual’s interests and enthusiasm in a particular activity and provide them with the necessary skills and experiences to help them to achieve their goals both in and outside of school.

A key part of our PE vision is to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum and to give every child the opportunity to take part in festivals as well as compete over a wide range of events. In doing so, we aim to teach the children to follow the School Games values of determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief and teamwork.

Aims

Through robust teaching practices, we aim to develop core areas for our children as they engage in the study of PE with positivity and excitement:

Knowledge
Children to understand and have the knowledge of how their own bodies react during physical activity and the benefits that can be gained. Children to develop an understanding of different sports and their rules.
Skills
Through a progressive curriculum, children will develop the way they perform skills and apply their knowledge of rules and conventions for different activities.
Strength
Children to develop strength and muscle memory in terms of key movements across all sports and exercise. Children to understand how strength is linked to flexibility and balance.
Endurance
Children to develop stamina and endurance which will enable them to perform and achieve sporting goals.
Enjoyment
By providing a broad range of activities which caters for all needs and abilities, children can develop enjoyment of physical activity which can have a positive aspect on all areas of their life.
Motivation
Students who play sports are better able to concentrate and maintain focus, which has a positive impact on their academic life. This can lead to improved attainment in all other academic subjects.

How will we enrich cultural capital?

We recognise that, while all children equally deserve the very best start in life, not all children receive the same opportunities as their peers around the country. Levels of disadvantage fluctuate from one school or class to another, and these differences can affect a child’s life chances in so many ways. We believe that it is our duty to enrich the lives of all children wherever possible to diminish this difference.

In the study of PE, our local area provides a rich variety of different sporting and fitness opportunities which can raise both aspirations and cultural capital.  In PE we will aim to raise the cultural capital of our students by providing countless opportunities to experience different physical activities and meet inspiring people.

  • Part of the Cleveland Schools Sports Partnership which allows access to wider PE expertise, competitions and events.
  • Provide opportunity to experience different sports.
  • Use correct terminology in lessons to build vocabulary and technical language.
  • Provide opportunity to represent the school in competitions, games and festivals.
  • Allow children to access local sports facilities which they may not attend outside of school.
  • Plan and use resources which are specific to different sports within PE.
  • Challenge and compete against themselves and others.
  • Inviting visitors from different sporting backgrounds to share their experiences and knowledge.
  • After school clubs to encourage further participation in physical activity.
  • ‘Active 60’ – bringing physical activity into different areas of the curriculum and classroom lessons.
  • Participating in Sports Week – giving all children the opportunity to participate in a variety of different physical activities not taught in PE lessons.
  • Sports Day to encourage whole school participation, fun, enjoyment and light competition.

Our PE Curriculum

Progression from EYFS

The early years foundation stage framework states that physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. There are 3 main areas of physical development which form the foundations of all physical activities. These are core strength & coordination, gross motor skills and fine motor skills.

  • Core strength & Coordination – To be confident with movement of any kind, children must develop good core strength and coordination. Developing both of these supports a child’s gross and fine motor skills as well as stability and balance. Core strength and coordination are also vital for children’s communication development as well as the more refined movements required for writing, drawing and self-care.
  • Gross motor skills – these are the skills required to use the whole body and the development of these skills can effect wellbeing and give children confidence and opportunities to socialise through play.
  • Fine motor skills – developing fine motor skills helps children to do things which require smaller and more precise movements such as writing and getting dressed. Fine motor skills and precision are linked to early literacy.
